As early settlers began to move further westward and became more numerous, the large game population was severely reduced, which appeared detrimental for Gray Wolves. With the crucial prey of deer, elk, bison and moose disappearing, Gray Wolves had no other choice than to look for alternatives. Unfortunately, wolves began to replace their ordinary prey with cattle and sheep. A crusade to eliminate the wolf began in the 19th century to protect the livestock that was critical to the settler's existence. A bounty of was still being offered as late as 1965. Wolves were not only shot from vehicles, trapped, hunted with dogs, but also animal carcasses were poisoned and left out for the wolves to feed on. However, this sad practice also killed many other animals that would typically feed on animal remains. Today, the wolf's comeback is evident, thanks to the Endangered Species Act, research, conservation, management programs and education efforts. They are still listed as an endangered species, but their population in most areas of the U.S. has significantly increased. Wolf research is young. For centuries, wolves were seen as a problem rather than as animals that should be studied. Although wolves have only been studied for about seven decades, new technologies have given researchers amazing ways of understanding wolves.
